NEW on Iwo Jima Memoirs:

Now You Can Add Your Name to the
Growing List of Personnel Who Have Served on Iwo Jima
Beginning February 19, 1945

Currently we are compiling a list of service personnel who have served on Iwo Jima between February 1945 and 1968 when the island reverted back to Japan.

If you served on the island, and would like to be added to the following list, please feel free to contact the web master of Iwo Jima Memoirs via the e-mail link near the bottom of this page.

Information that would be asked of you is:

Any additional information that you would care to contribute would be greatly appreciated.

If interested in forwarding a story or stories of your time on the island, we would happily add such a story to our growing list of stories.

During the time that the island of Iwo Jima was under the jurisdiction of the United States, a limited number of service personnel serve on the island in various capacities.

The island reverted back to Japan on June 26, 1968.

Thus, the number of service personnel who were stationed on that tiny island was indeed small compared to many other assignments around the world.

Please, join us here on Iwo Jima Memoirs

I was stationed on Iowa Jima from October 1953 to September 1954. I was stationed with the USAF at the emergency landing facility just after the end of the Korean War, I enclose a photo of our crew. I am in the front row next to the man with the eye patch. The dog was our mascot named Nipon.  I was an Airman First Class at the time. I would like to be included in the Memoirs.

I also have memories of the severe undertow and being caught in it while swimming on the beach shown in your photo. It was certainly a scary experience. While exploring the caves on Mt. Surubachi we discovered the skeletons of bodies of several Japanese soldiers never removed after World War II.

Thanks for the pictures and story of Iwo. I spent a short period of time working at the weather station. I was a radiosonde weather equipment operator.  I never did experience a typhoon of any consequence when I was there. My roommate was one of two men who drowned on the beach from the undertow.  I remember going into the water and felt it on my legs and I got out of there fast. His last name was Davis and his parents were Art & Bertha Davis of Anderson California. I can think of his first name now. We used to go into the jungle and have a steak or burger fry and when some guys got too much to drink they would come carrying back some large cannon shells that looked like new. I would like to see some picture of Iwo Jima now (2010 or 2011)  I do have some pictures if any would be of any value. I sure wish communications back then would have been like now. I could have talked to my family any time I wanted to. My commanding office was Captain Mike Hammer.  Lt. Geo. Morse and a Master Sergeant Finley were there when I was there. I also worked with a Wayne T Pierce.

I was a 1st Lt.at the time. I also served as Entry and Exit control Officer And Customs Inspection Officer. I have a lot of pictures, taken at the time I was there, but would have to round them up to see if any would be of interest to your site. It sounds interesting to join a group of people who made Iwo there home even if they had no choice in it.

This is a very impressive site. Thank you for providing this avenue of information. Working in supply one of my tasks was to take down and replace our U. S. Flag atop Mt. Suribachi once a week due to weather damage. Our flag at that time was flown continously in honor of our fallen marines. We tenderly disposed of our weathered flags with highest honors rendered. Touching those flags has left a loving memory in my heart that I continue carrying into my old age. SEMPER FIDELIS!
