Monument. (Webmaster Note: The spot where the 1st and Replacement Flag were raised atop Mt. Suribachi during the invasion in February 1945. After the return of the island to Japan in 1968, the flag pole and flag were removed and a plaque depicting an American Flag was added on the monument. Nearby a similar monument was added to honor the fallen Japanese defenders.)
